Das Wort potatis (Kartoffel) kann in der schwedischen Schriftsprache erstmals im Jahr 1725 in einem Werk des Naturforschers Kilian Stobæus nachgewiesen werden und kam über das englische Wort potatoes nach Schweden. Der englische Begriff wiederum geht auf das spanische Wort patata zurück, der vermutlich haitischen Ursprungs ist.
Die Kartoffel kam im Jahr 1655 über Olaus Rudbeck nach Schweden, wurde jedoch, unter dem Namen Peruviansk Nattskatta, vor allem wegen der Blüten, im Botanischen Garten in Uppsala angebaut. Im Jahr 1724 baute dann Jonas Alströmer in Alingsås die potatis wegen der Knollen an, also zum menschlichen Genuss. Alströmer brachte die potatis von einem seiner Aufenthalte in England mit.
